Optimism is healthy

A study done by a Dutch institution finds that optimistic men were only half as likely to die from cardiovascular disease as men not classified as optimists. The lead researcher in the study said the connection was not necessarily because of lower rates of depression among the optimistic:

"One possibility is that optimists are better at coping with adversity, and may, for example, take better care of themselves when they do fall ill."

Does being optimistic lead to healthy people or are healthy people more optimistic?

Like a lot of things, I'm sure it's a virtuous circle: being healthy makes you optimistic, which can make you take better care of yourself, which makes you healthier and more optimistic.

Another related topic, which I mention in a later posting, is the link between a healthy diet and good mental health (e.g., less anxiety, being less likely to suffer from insomnia). This also suggests that a healthy diet makes for a healthy body but also a healthy mind, which would make a person more optimistic.
