Salt and sand — as art
Discovery magazine has a very cool online slideshow titled "Each Grain of Sand a Tiny Work of Art," an example of which is shown below:

Next, in the movie below, watch the interesting patterns that salt forms on a metal plate when the plate is made to vibrate with sound. (Warning: This movie has high-pitched sounds. Be sure to turn down the volume on your speakers before playing, especially if you have pets.)
